We spend most of our lives working and sleeping. Many people find themselves unhappy in their careers and consequently not sleeping very soundly. In order to experience more happiness in our careers we need to seek more purpose in what we do. Why are you doing what you are doing? Can you do things better? Is there something you’d prefer to be doing? How long do you want to stay in the job you’re in? Many of us are just drifting along – doing the things that we feel we are meant to be doing rather than making choices.
You may be craving for more purpose in your life and feeling very unsettled because of this. People who lead lives of purpose tend to be both psychologically and physically better off than those who do not. Recent research shows a connection between a sense of purpose, physical and mental health benefits, and overall quality of life.
It’s so important that time is spent in schools on this critical element to inner-happiness. Thankfully big improvements have taken place on recent years. Some adolescents can drift into careers. Others end up doing what they feel is expected of them.
The truth is that there is only one of you. You are one of a kind. You are living a very precious life. Questions like – what do I want to achieve? What is important to me? Who am I and what do I want to do? are key questions. Too many people are ‘passengers on the train’. It’s never too late to ask the bigger questions. And it’s only when we ask them that we might discover the answers!!
