Living with more meaning

Psychologist Martin Seligman defines a meaningful life as “using your signature strengths and virtues in the service of something much larger than you are.” Expanding on this, Stanford psychologist William Damon and his colleagues define purpose as “a stable and generalised intention to accomplish something that is at once meaningful to the self and of consequence to the world beyond the self.” According to research, cultivating this sense of purpose is one of several enduring pathways to sustainable happiness. But how can we make our lives more meaningful?

Ultimately, a meaningful life is not discovered by accident; it is cultivated through the choices we make each day. We find meaning when we identify our strengths, invest in relationships, contribute to causes greater than ourselves, and use our talents in ways that benefit others. Purpose does not always emerge from extraordinary achievements but often from ordinary acts of service, kindness, growth, and connection. By living with intention and seeking opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of others, we not only enrich the world around us but also experience a deeper sense of fulfilment, resilience, and lasting happiness.
