Reclaim Sunday!!

Traditionally, Sundays were always a day of rest. Many of us were brought up knowing that it was a special day. It may have involved a visit to a church. It may have meant a roast dinner. Many of us read the papers as the soup bubbled. Sometimes a visit to relations was the highlight. Or having relations over. Sunday was certainly a day when family gathered and relaxed.

Sundays often facilitated a family walk. I remember plucking blackberries from the bushes. And visiting my grandparents. We used to kick ball in the big field. I remember bringing my accordion with me as we visited an ill neighbour. A few tunes might have been therapy for him, my parents believed. Sometimes the highlight on Sunday was ice cream and fresh fruit! Or a 99!

We need to reclaim our Sundays. The pandemic blurred the boundaries between work and home. Working at home often means that we never truly switch off. We dip in and out of work instead of remaining free of all things to do with our job for at least one day. Sundays are the one day when this should never happen.

Treat yourself to a decent walk today even if the weather doesn’t stay friendly. It will freshen you up! Or lie down and listen to a full album of music. Or try some relaxation exercises. Or jump into a book. It’s so important to ‘mind’ yourself. You need a little rest from the hectic world we have become too accustomed to tolerating.
