We should reach out to more people. It’s too easy to sit in the same corner of the staff room talking to the same people about the same things. It’s refreshing to talk to different people about different things. Fresh perspectives and new friendships may follow.
A change of scenery can refresh our spirits. That’s why holiday periods are critical. We need some variety in our lives. Everyone needs to get away from their work.
However, at work many people restrict their social conversations to a ‘chosen few’. Friendships are gifts especially in a staff room but it’s important to ‘mix’ it socially. Indeed, sometimes the company we keep may be holding us back.
So maybe at the tea-break today start a conversation with a new member of the team or chat to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Ask someone new to join your gang for lunch. Or merge groups.
As we grow older our social circle becomes smaller. But it’s when we grow older that we need more people in our lives. Sometimes we bring a degree of loneliness upon ourselves.
