Managing stress: True or False?

A lot of stress is to do with what’s going on in our heads.

True

We can make different sense of the same things. That’s why some people are stressed about things that don’t stress you out, and vice versa.

It’s all about how we think!

False

Sometimes we are fully entitled to be stressed due to our circumstances. A pending interview, moving home, demanding visitors, or working towards a deadline raise stress levels in a natural way.

If we change how we think, stress will reduce.

False

It’s not as simple as that. Some testing aspects of our lives or workplaces won’t change, and thinking differently about them doesn’t alleviate all the stress associated with them. We need to learn how to manage the stress levels better.

Meditation is the key solution.

Possibly

It depends on the type and how well it is taught and practised. Some people find it hard to meditate, and it needs discipline. But it’s certainly worth working on. It’s only one of many strategies that help.

Stress is very bad for us.

False

Prolonged or unnecessary stress affects health negatively – both mental and physical health. But we need stress. Stress keeps us on our toes. It ensures we are ready for challenges. Stress is not all bad. It’s excessive stress that we need to manage.

It’s easier to manage stress than we think.
