How often do you sit back and focus on all the things that are right in your life? Do you ever tell people how important they are to you and how much you appreciate them?
Gratitude research is a relatively new area of scientific research. Scientists have evaluated the practice of keeping a gratitude journal. Participants who kept gratitude journals were compared to those who did not or those who kept a record of daily hassles. The group who were recording the best things about their lives felt better. They also on a weekly basis were shown to have exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week (Emmons & McCullough, 2003)
They experienced a generally more positive mood and were more likely to to help others.
How often do you sit back and focus on all the things that are right in your life? Do you ever tell people how important they are to you and how much you appreciate them? Have you become so accustomed to the ordinary things like a sunny day, a starry sky, the smell of roses etc. Make a list of the wonderful things about today – the gifts of today and get into the habit. And remind others. If you and are your family are sitting around the dinner table this evening – be aware of how fortunate you are. Be grateful. Remind your children how lucky they are to have a friend to play with. Go for a walk this evening and look at all the beauty around you – the gift of life and bask in the glory of it!
