The Benefits of Optimism

Optimists also are less vulnerable to mental unwellness and even live longer than pessimists.

The very latest research shows that optimists enjoy better physical health, greater success at school and sport and more fulfilling lives in general. Optimists also are less vulnerable to mental unwellness and even live longer than pessimists. Why is this the case? Possibly because optimism promotes a more positive mood and leaves optimists less likely to be depressed or anxious. Studies show that being optimistic encourages us to be more persistent when faced with challenges or setbacks. Pessimists tend to surrender more easily and throw in the towel! Research indicates that optimists tend to look after their health better too. Maybe that is why they live longer than pessimists! The key question is – can we become more optimistic? Is it possible to learn optimism? (if we are not born with a natural tendency towards it) Or are we genetically predisposed to being optimistic? These are the kind of questions that psychology never asked until recently. Psychology was solely investigating negative phenomenon like depression, anxiety and stress.  The answer to the questions is that optimism can be learned. Optimism can be taught! Validated scientific studies show that there are ways to curb the tendency to be overly pessimistic.. More tomorrow on this ‘uplifting’ and ‘positive’ topic!
