Empowering people towards greater health, happiness and resilience

Moodwatchers visits Monaghan and Sligo during November and December 2013

As a psychologist I am passionate about the need to empower people towards greater health, happiness and resilience. Over many decades science has made a wonderful contribution in helping us understand negative emotion. The emphasis on deficits, disorders and disease has allowed for effective interventions to be developed in order to help and support people who are unwell or unhappy. We will always need to reach out to these people with the highest levels of competency and above all compassion. We need to know what is wrong before it can be put right.

However, why wait until we are unwell to learn about becoming healthier? Why wait until we are unhappy to explore what happiness means? If challenge and crisis are inevitable, we should learn to become more resilient in advance of them.  Psychology can teach us how to stay strong as well as understanding how we become weak. All of us need to be educated about our potential to bring about real change in our lives. We would all benefit from applying strategies that scientific studies indicate would enhance the quality of our lives, give us greater health outcomes and help us live more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

In recent decades research teams have started to examine positive emotion. This research has focused on what makes people happier, what gives them more meaning and purpose in life and what keeps them mentally strong. For ten years I have visited numerous communities throughout the whole of Ireland teaching this material through my Moodwatchers course. The course has seen me visit every county in Ireland . Health and happiness is what we all want. But we often wait until we lose them to talk about them. Moodwatchers opens up a conversation about these key areas. Each week over six weeks participants will examine what science says about health and happiness and work together on embracing a better quality of life.

Due to an ever increasing work schedule it is proving difficult to find the time to deliver Moodwatchers regularly. However, I always make an effort to deliver it in Sligo and Monaghan once every year. I am happy to announce that the course will visit the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan and the Southern Hotel, Sligo during November and December 2013

The hope is that it will uplift and inspire change in the lives of those who attend but even more importantly inspire participants to incorporate it into their homes, workplaces and communities.

If you competed the course many years ago, you might like to refresh yourself again. Or maybe you know someone who would benefit from Moodwatchers. The dates are as follows:
